Making the grade

“Grade A pasteurized” is on milk labels everywhere, but what does it mean? At the processing plant, the operators follow strict guidelines on the handling, storage, production, processing and transporting of milk to receive a Grade A status. The milk is pasteurized as well. Processors pasteurize the milk by heating it to approximately 161 degrees Fahrenheit and holding it at this temperature for 15 seconds. This removes harmful bacteria. At every step of the process, safety of the end product is monitored. Safety first, we always say.
