How ice cream met its cone
Ice cream didn’t always come in a cone. Italo Marchiony produced the first ice cream cone in 1896 in New York City. (He even got a patent for it in December 1903.) But the ice cream cone really took off at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis. Ernest A. Hamwi, a Syrian concessionaire, was selling a crisp, waffle-like pastry (called a zalabis) in a booth right next to an ice cream vendor. When the vendor ran out of dishes, Hamwi saw an easy solution to the ice cream vendor's problem: he quickly rolled one of his wafer-like waffles in the shape of a cone and gave it to the ice cream vendor. Customers were happy and the ice cream cone was well on its way.
